GS levels by education

  • GS-1: No high school diploma
  • GS-2: High school diploma
  • GS-3: 1 year study after high school
  • GS-4: 2 years study after high school
  • GS-5 or GS-7: 4 years study after high school (Bachelor)
  • GS-7: 5 years study after high school
  • GS-9: 6 years study after high school (Master)
  • GS-9: Law degree
  • GS-11: PhD. or advanced law degree
Experience also plays a role in your GS level, each year on the job helping you get to a higher level.
